Class 5 - Miss McNaught

Welcome to Class 5's page!

We are a class of year 3 pupils and we are all very excited to be coming back to school. This year, our teacher is Miss McNaught.

Autumn 1

Stone Age to Iron Age

This half term, our topic is called Stone Age to Iron Age. In History, we will be learning about how society changed during the prehistoric period. We will also investigate different sources to find out more about how the communities developed. In Science we will become rock detectives to learn all about different types of rock, soils and fossils. In Art we will be creating cave drawings, by first focusing on different sketching techniques. Finally, in Computing, we will be focusing on E-Safety.

Literacy - Writing

First, we will be learning to retell stories in familiar settings, focusing on David Walliam's text - The World's Worst Children - Nigel Nit Boy. We will be using adverbial openers, pronouns, inverted commas and will also look at expanded noun phrases to describe our characters and settings. We will also use some of our topic knowledge to help us in our literacy work this half term. We will be writing a recount based on Stig of the Dump, in the form of a letter, again focusing on different adverbial openers. Finally, we will be writing an information text.

For the first term, our key foci will be handwriting, improving our spelling and ensuring our writing is accurately punctuated and makes sense. We will be using lots of orally sentence rehearsal and self and peer assessment to support this.

Literacy - Reading

For the first half term, we will focus on retrieval and prediction. We will use a number of texts throughout the half term to improve our skills with our first text being Stig of the Dump. We will also develop our knowledge and breadth of vocabulary during these sessions to help us improve our writing.

In place value lessons we will learn to represent numbers up to 1,000, find 1, 10 or 100 more than a given number, compare and order numbers and objects to 1,000 and look at number lines to 1,000. In addition and subtraction lessons we will focus on adding and subtracting 3 digit and 1 digit/ 2 digit and 1 digit numbers initially, working our way up to adding and subtracting 3 digit and 2 digit numbers.
