Town Planners
Topic
This half term, our topic is called Town Planners (with a focus on the Industrial Revolution). In Geography, we will be learning about the local and wider area (Eastern Europe) and locating places on maps using atlases. Then we will look at how our local area has changed and developed over time focusing on the impact of the industrial revolution. In History, we will then look at Barnsley's main industries during the industrial revolution with a focus on the linen factories and their working conditions. In Design Technology, we will then learn sewing techniques and skills and design and create our own linen product. Finally, in computing, we will be learning the importance of E-Safety.
Literacy - Writing
We will use some of our topic knowledge to help us in our literacy work this half term. First, we will be learning to write an information text based on places in our local area. We will focus on using non-fiction features correctly, using coordinating and subordinating conjunctions and ensuring our work is correctly punctuated. After this, we will be using drama to inspire our diary writing and imagining we are children working in factory conditions in the Victorian Era. We will be using lots of emotive language as well as adverbial openers with a particular focus on time and manner adverbials. Finally, we will be planning and writing our own stories based on a familiar setting. Again, we will focus on adverbial openers and begin to look expanded noun phrases to describe our characters and settings.
For the first term, our key foci will be handwriting, improving our spelling and ensuring our writing is accurately punctuated and makes sense. We will be using lots of orally sentence rehearsal and self and peer assessment to support this.
Literacy - Reading
For the first half term, our key skill focus will be retrieval. We will be looking at and learning about each skill which underpins accurate retrieval of information. We will be using a range of texts, extracts, poems and stories for this. Improving pupils breath and knowledge of vocabulary will be entwined throughout all writing and reading sessions but some sessions will solely focus on answer comprehension questions based on it. Pupils will be encouraged to explore and collect unknown and ambitious vocabulary throughout all lessons. This is also taught through our weekly Word of the Week task.
Maths
For the first half term, we will be securing our understanding of number and place value. We will be learning to read and write numbers to 1000 or 10,000, understand the value of each digit and be able to partition in different ways. Ordering, comparing and rounding numbers will then follow then we will be moving on to developing our understanding of decimal and negative numbers before learning all about roman numerals.
In mental maths, we will be focusing on:
