Summer Extended Homework

Summer 

Science, History, DT and Geography 

Topic

This term, our topic is called Groovy Greeks  We will learn about Eastern Europe via geography and an international History study based on the Greeks,  plus much much more!  In science (physics) , we will be looking at sound and how sound vibrates, sound waves and the workings of an ear.  In Design Technology, we will then learn cooking techniques and studying the artist Zeuxis.  Finally, in computing, algorithms and multi media. 

 

Literacy - Writing 

We will use some of our topic knowledge to help us in our literacy work this half term. First, we will be learning to write an information text based on the zodiac signs. We will be using lots of informative and technical vocabulary as well as adverbial openers with a particular focus on time and manner adverbials. After that,  we will be writing a persuasive letter. Instructional text will allow us to write about our cooking element of DT. Play scripts and twisted tales will be written using out Greek knowledge. This is where we will be understanding the structure and features of a letter. Finally, we will be completing an author study.  

 

For the first term, our key foci will be proof reading and embedding key skills across all genre types. Also that our writing is accurately punctuated and makes sense. We will be using lots of orally sentence rehearsal and self and peer assessment to support this. 

 

Literacy - Reading

 

For the term, our key skill focus will be ordering, comparing and summerises with an overall recap of all the VIPERSOC elements. We will be looking at and learning about each skill which underpins accurate retrieval of information. We will be reading the book How Let's the Dogs Out. Improving pupils breath and knowledge of vocabulary will be entwined throughout all writing and reading sessions but some sessions will solely focus on answer comprehension questions based on it. Pupils will be encouraged to explore and collect unknown and ambitious vocabulary throughout all lessons. This is also taught through our weekly Word of the Week task. 

 

Maths

 

For the this term, we will be securing our understanding of decimals including money,shape, position and directions and converting units of measurements. We will  secure our knowledge of using column method for multiplying via daily arithmetic sessions. 

In mental maths, we will be focusing on: 

Y4:

  • rapid recall of all times tables 
  • know multiples and factors of numbers
  • to know squared and prime numbers

 

Y5: 

  • rapid recall of all times tables
  • know multiples and common factors of numbers
  • to know squared, prime and cubed numbers

Autumn 2

Geography and Biology

Topic

This half term, our topic is called Survival studying physical geography including volcanoes and earthquakes. We will learn about Earth's tectonic plates, how earthquakes are measured using  seismographs plus much much more!  In Biology, we will be looking into Living Things and Their Habitats including classification keys and environment changes.  In Design Technology, we will then learn drawing techniques studying the artist Henri Rousseau. Finally, in computing, we will be learning Search Technologies. 

 

Literacy - Writing 

     

We will use some of our topic knowledge to help us in our literacy work this half term. First, we will be learning to write a diary based on our guided reading book Kensuke's Kingdom. We will be using lots of emotive and figurative language as well as adverbial openers with a particular focus on time and manner adverbials. After that,  we will be writing a newspaper report based on an earthquake or volcano disaster studied in geography. This is where we will be understanding the structure and features of a newspaper report. Finally, we will be completing an author study.  

 

For the first term, our key foci will be handwriting, improving our spelling and ensuring our writing is accurately punctuated and makes sense. We will be using lots of orally sentence rehearsal and self and peer assessment to support this.

For the first half term, our key skill focus will be retrieval, vocabulary and inference. We will be looking at and learning about each skill which underpins accurate retrieval of information. We will be reading the book Kensuke's Kingdom. Improving pupils breath and knowledge of vocabulary will be entwined throughout all writing and reading sessions but some sessions will solely focus on answer comprehension questions based on it. Pupils will be encouraged to explore and collect unknown and ambitious vocabulary throughout all lessons. This is also taught through our weekly Word of the Week task. 

 

Maths

 

For the first half term, we will be securing our understanding of multiplication/division and length/perimeter. We will be learning to multiply and divide by 10,100 and 1000. We will  secure our knowledge of using column method for multiplying a three digit number by a one digit number and a two digit number by a two digit number. For division, we will learn how to use the 'bus stop' method. Our multiplication knowledge will embed our understanding of area and perimeter.  

In mental maths, we will be focusing on:

We are a class of year 4 and year 5 pupils and we are very excited to be returning to school. This year, our teacher is Mrs Bradshaw and we will be supported by Mr Hanson, Miss Gracie and Miss Edwards. 

 

Autumn 1

Industrial Revolution /Town Planners

Topic

This half term, our topic is called Town Planners (with a focus on the Industrial Revolution). In Geography, we will be learning about the local and wider area (Eastern Europe) and locating places on maps using atlases.  Then we will look at how our local area has changed and developed over time focusing on the impact of the industrial revolution. In History, we will then look at Barnsley's main industries during the industrial revolution with a focus on the linen factories and their working conditions. In Design Technology, we will then learn sewing techniques and skills and design and create our own linen product. Finally, in computing, we will be learning the importance of E-Safety. 

 

Literacy - Writing 

     

We will use some of our topic knowledge to help us in our literacy work this half term. First, we will be learning to write descriptive poetry based on the working conditions, sounds and the environment in the industrial factories. We will be using lots of emotive and figurative language as well as adverbial openers with a particular focus on time and manner adverbials. After that,  we will be planning and writing our own stories based on a familiar setting. Again, we will focus on adverbial openers and begin to look at expanded noun phrases to describe our characters and settings. Finally, we will be writing a balanced argument surrounding the geographical changes to our local area, which links to the Town Planners element of topic.

Improving pupils breath and knowledge of vocabulary will be entwined throughout all writing and reading sessions but some sessions will solely focus on answer comprehension questions based on it. Pupils will be encouraged to explore and collect unknown and ambitious vocabulary throughout all lessons. This is also taught through our weekly Word of the Week task. 

 

Maths

 

For the first half term, we will be securing our understanding of number and place value. We will be learning to read and write numbers to 1000 or 100,000, understand the value of each digit and be able to partition in different ways. Ordering, comparing and rounding numbers will then follow then we will be moving on to developing our understanding of decimal and negative numbers before learning all about roman numerals. 

In mental maths, we will be focusing on: 

Y4:

  • Counting on and back in 100s and 50s. 
  • Counting on and back in multiples of  6, 7 and 9
  • Learning and practising the 6, 7 and 9 times tables as well as previously taught times tables (2, 5, 10, 3 ,4 ,8)

 

Y5: 

  • Counting on and back in 1000s and 25s. 
  • Counting on and back in multiples of 6, 7 and 9
